Trekking in the Atlas Mountains – The hike to the summit is challenging but requires no mountaineering experience, and the spectacular panoramic view from the summit makes the hard work worth it. With the start of the trek just a couple of hours’ drive from Marrakech, you can reach the summit and back within 5 days, and still have time to explore Morocco’s most captivating city, Marrakech.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Marrakech – Imi 1500m – Azzaden Valley 1800m
Our driver will pick you up from where you are staying in Marrakech and take you to Imi Oughlad, the starting point of your trek. After some famous Moroccan mint tea, your guide will discuss with you the map of the area before you start to hike toTizintacht (1800m) over a pass. You will pass through the Berber village of Aitlhcen and juniper trees, stopping on half way for lunch, before you get to Azzand Valley, one of the most beautiful valleys in the High Atlas Mountains. The hike will be approximately 6 hours. You will stay in the last village in the valley, where you’ll enjoy a clear sky and stars from a local guest house.

Day 2 : Azzaden Valley – Tizi Mzik Pass2300m – Imlil Valley 1900m
After a warm breakfast, your guide will take you to the waterfalls before you come back for lunch at Mzik Pass. The pass offers amazing views of the Atlas mountains and mount Toubkal. After lunch continue to Tamatert village. There you’ll have the opportunity to explore the small village of Imlil, where you will stay in a guesthouse after approximately 5 hours of walking.

Day 3 : Imlil Valley 1900m – Refuge du Toubkal 3207m
After breakfast in Tamatert village you will go up the Mizan Valley, via Armed village and Shamharouch. Arrive at the Toubkal guest hut where you will stay for overnight. After approximately 6 hours of hiking you will feel like you can almost touch the stars.

Day 4 : Refuge Toubkal 3207m -Toubkal Summit 4167m- Base camp (Toubkal Refuge)
In the early morning, climb to the summit of Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. The route takes us up the south cirque, crossing the stream above the refuge. The walk is relatively straightforward; however the altitude may make the trekking difficult in parts. The views along the way will make the journey more than worth it! When you reach the summit you will see breathtaking vistas across the surrounding landscape in every direction, from the Marrakech plain to the High AtlasMountains in the north, and as far south as the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. You will retrace your steps back down the mountain to the Toubkal refuge, where you will again spend the night.

Day 5 : Refuge du Toubkal – Imlil Valley – Marrakech
After a warm breakfast you will hike back down to Imlil village where you will meet your driver who will take you back to Marrakech where you can stay to explore that beautiful city and its many attractions, or use it as a starting point for other trips around Morocco.
